Teshay Gouthro on his CFFC debut and CM Punk dislike

Teshay Gouthro tests skills with Efren Escareno at CFFC 109 on May 27th. This bantamweight bout transpires at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and broadcasts on UFC Fight Pass.

I spoke with Gouthro ahead of his first fighting foray within this organization. Excerpts from our chat are below.

Thoughts on Efren Escareno ahead of this CFFC bout

“I do all my fight study myself. I make up my own fight plans and I’ll sit down with the coaches to explain what I think I should be doing. Usually, they come back with the exact same plan. We’re pretty much on the same wave. They trust my fight IQ and my game-planning. Then if they have anything they want to tune-up, we just fix that. But I really love my coaches that they believe in (me). I’ve had over fifteen fights from amateur to pro. I understand the game very deeply. I’m only 4-1 but I think my knowledge is far beyond that. The way I do a lot of fight study.”

“But this guy, I’ve studied him (and) he’s a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. That’s really all he’s got. He’s Mexican, so he’s going to be really tough. Comes forward with heavy pressure but his striking is not nearly on my level. His wrestling is not even close to my level. Gonna be shooting but how’s he going to take me down without wrestling? He’s got that brown belt but really what’s he going to do with it if he can’t get me down? He’s gonna fucking probably jump guard. Anywhere this fight goes, I feel completely confident.”

“Mentally I know. So with this guy, there’s a little story behind us. He said no to me twice last year. Said no to me for the LFA one at the beginning of this year. Then I messaged him calling him out and said some harsh words while laughing at him. Because we have the same record. So why not fight? Then he took this one. I wasn’t expecting him to say yes. Then he said yes and signed the contract. It was only a month camp. So I fucking tore my body apart to get ready for him.”

Teshay Gouthro continued, “I know mentally he knows. Deep down he knows. He might be thinking he’s going to win and all that but I feel very confident. But it might have been his coaches saying no as well too. But deep down, I still know he knows. We’re gonna feel him out and he’s gonna break.”

Gouthro’s post-fight mic work and if AEW star/ CFFC commentator CM Punk can assess the promo work My House will do

“Yeah, I don’t like CM Punk as a man, to be honest. I don’t know. Something about that guy… Just a general vibe. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. If you listen to him really when he’s commentating. He bugs the shit out of me. He does, man. If he brings good vibes, I might not tell him how it is but we’ll see. I’m not a fake, right. If I don’t like you, I’m not going to pretend like I like you. I’ll tell you how it is to your face. I won’t be rude about it. If he brings good vibes and energy, I won’t even be in the mood to. But yeah, just not my cup of tea.”
