Man Dead and Woman Hospitalized After Falling Off Jet Ski in Hudson River Accident

A jet ski accident in New York City on Saturday night left one man dead and one woman hospitalized.

CBS News reports the couple rode their jet ski from Hoboken, New Jersey to New York City, crashing in the Hudson River around 7:20 p.m. near Battery Place and Vesey Street, just off the southern tip of Manhattan.

Police said the jet ski flipped in the water while traveling at high speeds. The 22-year-old woman was able to swim to safety to the Financial Ferry Terminal near Battery Place and the West Side Highway. She was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

The 23-year-old man was taken under by the current near the ferry terminal. After about three hours, diver teams from the FDNY and NYPD retrieved the man’s body 150 yards south of the terminal, according to officials. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 10:30 p.m.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The news arrives just two years after two men were killed while jet skiing in Eastchester Bay, between City Island and the Bronx.

“People don’t take their own safety as seriously as they really should,” Brian Orenstein, owner of a Hoboken company that provides jet ski tours, told the New York Times in 2020. “They don’t realize that this thousand-pound machine can remove your limb in half a second.”
