United Airlines cleared to reactivate PW4000-powered B777s

United Airlines (UA, Chicago O’Hare) has been cleared by the US Federal Aviation Administration to restart operations of its Pratt & Whitney PW4000-powered B777s, more than a year after they were grounded over engine safety concerns.

Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said at a Bank of America industry conference that the regulator issued a safety bulletin to the airline on May 16, 2022. He predicted that the first aircraft would be back in service in “around a week” from that day.

United Airlines operates fifty-two B777s powered by PW4000 Family engines, comprising nineteen B777-200s and thirty-three B777-200(ER)s. All of them were grounded in February 2021, after an uncontained engine failure caused an emergency landing of a B777-200 shortly after take-off from Denver Int’l. The airline hoped to start reactivating the B777s this month, but the delayed FAA approval caused it to adjust its schedule to June.

US, EU, Chinese regulators stall Korean Air-Asiana merger

Korean Air (KE, Seoul Incheon) is experiencing turbulence in obtaining approval from competition authorities in the United States, Europe, and China for its planned KRW1.8 trillion won (USD1.5 billion) acquisition of a 63.88% stake in rival Asiana Airlines (OZ, Seoul Incheon), the JoongAng Daily and Business Korea reported.

A South Korean government official told local media that “the US Justice Department strongly believes that a marriage between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines will impose restrictions on fair competition, so the merger will face difficulties in obtaining approval.”

The issue was reportedly discussed during a business trip to the United States by Cho Sung-wook, chair of South Korea’s antitrust agency the Korea Fair Trade Commission, in early April. The Justice Department reportedly told the Korean flag carrier to present detailed measures addressing certain competition issues, but Korean Air submitted its plans with a significant delay.

Korea’s Asiana Airlines sues ex-mgmt of Gategroup

Asiana Airlines (OZ, Seoul Incheon) has lodged a lawsuit against former executives of the Swiss onboard caterer and retailer Gategroup for allegedly conspiring with Park Sam-koo, ex-chairman of the airline’s parent Kumho Asiana Group, in cutting the price it paid in 2016 for the exclusive rights to serve inflight meals until 2047 to KRW133.3 billion won (USD104.5 million).

It filed the criminal complaint, for breach of trust in relation to the exclusive 30-year deal, at the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office in March, sources told local media.

It has been speculated that the deal was forged in return for the Swiss firm’s purchase of KRW160 billion (USD126 million) worth of bonds and warrants which Asiana Airlines issued for liquidity-challenged sister ground-transport specialist Kumho Buslines.

Park was arrested in May 2021 for allegedly overseeing these and other transactions between affiliates within the Kumho Asiana conglomerate, yielding huge gains for him and his family. He remains on trial and will be sentenced next month.
