Iiser Urged To Create Alternative Energy Options & Encourage Sustainable Living | Pune News – Times of India

Pune: Union minister of education Dharmendra Pradhan has advised students of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune to address water and waste management-related issues.
Pradhan laid the foundation stone for the newly established department of data science and inaugurated the national facility for Gene Function in Health and Disease.
Pradhan said, “Work carried out at the institute has the potential to reach many more students across the country. The institute’s members must explore ways to create alternative energy options and inculcate an awareness of sustainable living among students for future generations. We also need to incentivize the participation in sports among students at the same level as we do academics.” Pradhan also visited the PARAM Brahma supercomputer at the institute.
Set up with funding from the department of biotechnology, the purpose behind creating the National Facility for Gene Function in Health and Disease is to make knock-out and transgenic animal models in India.
The facility has over 50 clean rooms and 30 service rooms and houses mice, rats, and rabbits maintained in a specific pathogen-free condition to avoid interference with research objectives.
Dean of research and development at IISER, Pune, Anjan Banerjee, said, “Over 10 research groups are currently using the facility from IISER Pune and are providing services to TIFR, ministry of Ayush, SPPU, and NCL, Pune. Creation and maintenance of the facility require training. Training of students and other researchers is continuous that the facility invests time and energies in.”
